Nearest Green Distillery, Tennessee, United States

4.5 (49 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Shelbyville Day Trips

When visiting Nashville put this distillery on your tour list.

I was totally amazed with the presentations from the tour guides on learning the history of Uncle Nearest Green aka Nathan Green who was a slave and than became a free slave. I am a wine drinker but, I was amazed to learn that Uncle Nearest is the first known African-American master distiller and helped put Jack Daniel whiskey on the map. I appreciate how Fawn Weaver brought the story of Nearest Green whiskey to the light for the world to taste and learn. It's good that the truth has found the light.

Hear The Story of the Godfather of Tennessee Whiskey
We had a great time here at the distillery. The really get into the story of the godfather of Tennessee whiskey, Nearest Green. The tell the story of him, as well as showing the lineage that keeps the brand alive today, as his great great granddaughter is the current master distiller. The grounds are well kept, and they have the world's longest bar, which is inside the Humble Baron venue. Our tour included tasting, where we tasted five spirits, including three that can only be bought at the distillery. Our tour guide, Xavier, was great, funny, and had a wealth of knowledge about the brand itself, as well as the process of Tennessee whiskey. The gift shop is huge, and has an enormous amount of products for purchase. Before you leave, make sure to grab food at Barrelhouse BBQ, which is connected to the distillery. The grilled cheese on crack was FIRE! You can get it with any choice of me on it. Also, the bread pudding and peach cobbler were delicious. There is plenty of free parking in their lot, so no worries.

Definitely worth a visit & Looking forward to their future!!
We drove three hours to learn about “Uncle Nearest” and his whiskey. This facility is beautiful and both the history and whisky lessons were informative. I am so pleased the story of Nearest has been unearthed and brought back to life. The facility is in a young stage with many exciting plans for the future. I am looking forward to another visit in a few years! (But I would certainly recommend going now!) There is already a BBQ restaurant operating on premises and we enjoyed it very much! Especially the greens and cornbread!?
