A wonderful stay with plenty to do, even on a rainy day
Situated on Chongming Island, the Mahota Farm is a sustainable establishment with a focus on symbiosis. The Farm has a total land area of 43 hectares, with 28 hectares devoted to agronomic and horticultural crops. Waste to resource management facilities like waste lagoons, wetlands, and the wildlife sanctuary occupy 8 hectares of land.

One-of-a-kind Experience
Mahota runs other resorts throughout Asia. Uniquely, this one truly highlights eco-tourism and learning about how healthy organic farms produce veggies year-round, as well as eggs. They also relate this to personal health, serving extremely healthy foods. I traveled there as a scholar, and during the off-season. It was a highly satisfying adventure for me. Indeed, just seeing the bridge to Chongming Island and the island are very worthwhile. At Mahota, the sustainable architecture is very attractive, just as the farm fields are immaculately neat. I was able to get a bicycle to travel over the extensive farm area, and nearby. On the farm, there are signs everywhere in Chinese and English to explain what you're looking at. Elsewhere on Chongming there is no English not even very many street signs. In terms of staying overnight, it is an option and reasonable. Healthy meals are included. I was able to stay in one of their yurts overnight, and it was modest but quite comfortable even on a chilly night, and there was even reliable wi-fi. Only a handful of the staff here speak any English, but I still managed. You really do need a car to get there. But if you can arrange for the ride, it's worth a day visit and even staying overnight.

Weekend Farm Stay
unique experience of a weekend stay at Mahota Farm Chongming, RMB 798 for 2 persons include overnight accommodation, steam boat, free and easy activities and breakfast. Opted for yurt which is nicely decorated and fitted with modern comforts such as western bathroom. It is a nice getaway from the city, given that it is a true blue farm, there's a weird fertilizer smell in the air and also files flying throughout, it is really not for those who prefers Hilton or Grand Hyatt. Free and easy activities include cycling, river fishing, animal feeding etc. At the end of stay, Mahota Farm gave out free organic vegetables as gifts. Overall, great experience!
