Daimiao Temple, Shandong, China

4.0 (89 reviews) Spent Ranking #5 in Tai'an Ancient Ruins

One of the best temples I visited in China

I'll keep it short. I have definitely not visited all temples in China, but certainly more than a handful. Of all these, Daimiao is the dearest to me. It is quite big, not so crowded (except for holidays and weekends), it has terrific halls and architecture (check out the mural in the main hall), a lovely garden but most of all, it has a wonderful atmosphere and feel to it. Let the busy city life drop away and just sit here for a while. You'll love it.

worth a visit of 2 or more hours if you have the time
Located about a 30-40 minute walk south of the DaiZong Archway (the start of the climb up Tai Shan), if you’re doing bottom-to-top by foot (and not cable car), and not overnighting on its summit, Daimio Temple deserves a standalone visit on its own day. 30rmb entry, it’s worth at least an hour, if not two or more, of your time. Outside its north-eastern corner you’ll find the DaiBei market, also worth a visit, especially for a bite of some freshly prepared local cuisine.

    You are in Tai'an
If you find yourself in Tai'an and let's be honest if you do you are there for business or to see the mountain and if you are there for either a midsized temple that closes early is perfect, as you should be either looking to climb the mountain at night, or you have a business dinner to go to, as for the temple itself it is pleasant enough and hosts a bit of the ancient culture that seems to be all but eradicated from Shandong (remember it is one of the oldest places in China yet has so few historical sights to see. Like anywhere in China expect to be sold a thousand goods and trinkets.
