Nord Ostseekanal (Kiel Canal), Schleswig-Holstein, Germany
4.5 (96 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Brunsbuettel Bodies of Water
Entrance from the North Sea
if you look at the north-east sea channel near Brunsbüttel, you automatically land at the ferry into the village. It is also impressive to see the huge ships passing the ferry. But before that you should keep left and drive to the end of the road where you can park your car. There, one has a relatively decent overview of the entrance of the big ships into the locks of the canal. Just take your time, watch the ships, come down. However, one gets the better explanations and a better overview on the entrance from the Baltic Sea near Kiel.

Serendipitous portion of our cruise
The cruise through the Kiel Canal was something we were not particularly looking forward to. We anticipated it as nothing more than an opportunity to catch up on laundry, reading and exercise. It was a very pleasant surprise to see all the little villages on both sides of the canal--small farms, small hamlets, and friendly villagers waving to us as though they had never seen a cruise ship before. Cyclists pedalling along the canal stopped to wave to us also. All-in-all, it was a very pleasant surprise.

Kiel Canal by cruise ship
The transit of the Kiel Canal aboard the Silversea ship the Silver Whisper is a great experience, wIth the land only metres away on each side as you roll through beautiful German countryside. Open fields, forest, small villages and other ships passing VERY close by. A really interesting, relaxing and memorable day.
