Museum-gem store
The museum is on one side of the hallway and the gem and jewelry store is on the other side of the hallway. Equal size, equally interesting. There is not pressure to shop in the store, however, I don't know why one wouldn't want to look at the beautiful gems and nice jewelry after showing interest in the history and geography of how gems are mined and polished. We enjoyed both and came away with a nice blue topaz souvenir.

Interesting
This small museum was a nice stop on our visit to Ratnapura. It was great to see how the stones look before they are polished and processed. There's so many places to buy gem stones with pushy salespeople and rip-off tourist prices, but not this one! They have a large selection of stones and jewellery made on-site with a very knowledgable staff who let us look at our own pace and didn't push us to buy. Keep a keen eye out for the museum sign on the main road as we missed it the first time we drove past!

Good display but a bit tired
The museum has a lot of gems on display however the displays are very tired and could do with a good overhaul to tidy it up. The good points of this place are that entry is free and also that the people there are very knowledgable whilst not being pushy at all.
