North Higgins Lake State Park, Michigan, United States

Just stopped in here when looking for CCCmuseum. WOW THAT WAYER LOOKS CLEAR AND CLEAN( and shallow way out) !

I’m looking for the CCC Museum we saw the road down to this lake which was very close to the entrance road so we stopped in quickly and boy I was amazed at how clean and clear and how shallow the water was seems like it went out probably at least 100 yards before it got deeper. I would like to come back and swim there some day although it’s close to two hours from our house in Grand Rapids area. We played golf town in Farwell at the Eagle Glen golf course and we were on our way up to Gaylord and we never seem to have time to stop at Higgins Lake State Park or Hartwick State Park and the CCC Museum so we got them all done

A lot has changed since 1956!
My husband began camping here with his family in 1956. At that time the campsites were on the shore. When the new sections were developed we thought the atmosphere would be lost. Wrong. The park service put a lot of thought into how to grow this location. The put in 2 new sections to maintain the smaller feel, and they turned the lakeside campsites into picnic tables, pavilion, bath house, playground and an excellent boat launching area. They also developed an excellent trail for bikes & hikes that will take you all the way to the DQ! We also use the facility all winter to walk our dog (especially during hunting season) because they maintain the park so well! And it would be remiss to not mention the CCC Museum that is linked by the trail. They have an excellent selection of memorabilia, original buildings & displays.

    Not Very Pet Friendly
Hard to rate because we absolutely love this beach and lake. However, if you want to bring a dog, know that you will be isolated to the furthest possible point from the parking lot where actual access to water is limited due to difficulty of entry. We came with our paddle boards and our dog and were exhausted by the time we got to the pet friendly access. (Parking is NOT close) Then, we're in this small space with other people's dogs who are not as easy going as ours. Barking does not make for a peaceful beach day. There are SO many isolated spots before the pet friendly area, I really don't understand why North Higgins is so limited. We could easily be in one of those spaces without bothering anyone. Super annoying.
