Good leisurely river experience

Our group of 6 must have arrived at a busy time of the day, due to a large number of others guests already waiting when we arrived. At check-in, we were told we would more than likely be able to get on the next shuttle despite the large number of people waiting, but it became full, so we had to wait for the next one. It was supposed to return “shortly” from dropping off another load of guests, but shortly turned into an hour wait. However, we were able to sit down by the river in a shaded area during this time. Once the shuttle returned, transport was fairly smooth. I do feel like staff and operations were somewhat unorganized, but it got the job done. There was a very minimal safety briefing on the bus ride to the “put in” area, but no real instructions were needed. The river was very calm. My husband & I had a good time in our double, inflatable “Funyak” as we went down the Hiwassee River.

They'll get you down the river
They will get you down the river. They are super friendly and the store is quaint. Everything is very rustic, which may be liked by some. We were about 20 minutes late leaving on the trip because they kept adding people and forgetting to bring enough boats up. No problem with the one person kayak though. The boats are very nice and well taken care enough, no problems with not having enough air. The life jackets had a terrible moldy smell, I smelled it.the entire trip down, and my shirt smelled of mold after the trip. I did see them sanitize the jackets after the trip, which is great during COVID times. Also all employees were wearing masks. I have never been down a river trip where helmets are not standard and recommended. We were practically discouraged from wearing one, and you have to pay extra for a helmet..i have been down thus river several times before, and I do think this is a safety issue because there are some very rocky areas on the river and areas where you could potentially fall off your boat. The trip up... They take you up to the put in is in the back of a truck, chain link across the back of the truck, standing, no seats and made me very nervous, especially if you are taking youngsters. The way up the river is on a small road with a lot of winding and the traffic up there can be a little iffy. There could be major injury if ever in an accident. There is one tiny bathroom (not clean) at the side of the store. And the changing room is basically a shed at the back of the building, no designation for male or female. We went on a day that was not busy. But during the weekend, this place gets PACKED and I could see there be a problem using the bathroom or changing. There is a lot of parking out the back of the outpost, so worst case scenario you can change next to your car if you can cover up adequately. Next time I will use the other outfitter. They are a little more expensive, but probably worth it given some of the inconveniences and safety concerns I had. But like I said, they will get you up the river, and it is a great time.
