Banos de la Marrana, Region of Murcia, Spain

4.0 (9 reviews) Spent < 1 hour Ranking #6 in Isla Plana Hot Springs & Geysers

An interesting and unusual historic building

The Baños de la Marrana is reached by a wooden walkway from the little church Ermita de Nuestra Senora del Carmen. The walkways take you past some remains of Roman Kilns. The Baños de la Marrana are the ruins of disused Thermal baths which were opened to the public 2 May 1901 by Dr Vera but were abandoned sometime in the mid 20th Century. According to 11th and 12th Centry legend a Sow suffering from Rheumatism walked down to the beach where there was a hot spring and rolled in the hot water and was cured. It is quite an interesting landmark and worth a quick look. It is one of the things that make Isla Plana an interesting and unique seaside village.

NOT OPEN but worth a roam around the outside.
The outside has been renovated before Covid lockdown. The doors have been locked which is a good thing as through the metal framed grid windows some graffiti can be seen. Hopefully the baths will be finished when the area recovers from the economic costs of covid

Missed opportunity Ayuntamiento de Cartagena ....
The medieval Banos de la Marrana have been restaurated from the outside. Several years ago you could freely visit the (not restaurated) inside which gave an impression of how the baths may have looked like. Obviously a lot of litter as well... . Since then the door has been locked - so Ayuntamiento of Cartagena you should properly restaurate this valuable piece of your history and make it available to the public say once a week or a least one a month.
