The Currency Museum of the Bank Al-Maghrib, Rabat-Sale-Kenitra, Morocco

Paintings of Morocco by foreigners plus coins

This museum in a bank has two areas of focus and does both of them exceedingly well. For art lovers, start here to view paintings of Morocco by foreign artists, then move to the Museum Mohamed VI to see how Moroccan artists have themselves portrayed their country. Numismatists may not even notice the paintings, as the museums displays and commentaries on coins (many of them very ancient) are the best that I have ever seen.

    Great museum, Moroccan (=lousy) staff
Museum boutique is closed for some reason (probably because the staff is busy gossiping in one of the administrative rooms). Halfway through my visit a lady said I should check my bag at the front. I went there and the 3 girls didn't even acknowledge my presence, they were too busy talking, laughing and gossiping between themselves. Zero professionalism, worse than in a shopping mall. Indeed the admission lady will sell you a ticket and ask that you refrain from taking pictures but I doubt this is enforced (there are cameras throughout), The museum features an AHHH-MAAAY-ZING collection of gold and silver coins (I was surprised that the Bank of Morocco or the Moroccan government had such an extensive collection) from prehistoric times all the way to modern days. There is also an exhibit of banknotes circulated in Morocco from the beginnings to modern days as well as an art exhibit and an exhibition about Saharan trade and Morocco as the trading center between Europe and Africa. The Bank Al-Maghrib is also presented in the context of the activities of a central bank. Don't miss the instructive videos and exhibits on how Moroccan banknotes and coins are produced (and destroyed). Very interesting museum, terrible staff.
