Medina of Rabat, Rabat-Sale-Kenitra, Morocco

Pleasant historic ambiance; not too many tourists (yet)

It is hard to imagine Rabat only had a population of around 20,000 when the French invasion started in 1907. Most people lived in the old medina surrounded by walls that had lost their efficacy as a defense against hostile intruders. No one had bothered to demolish them. Nowadays they form a fine demarcation line between the old and the new city and add to a pleasant historic ambiance. The medina of Rabat is perhaps small, but not as cramped as the ones of Fez or Marrakech. The alleys are generally a bit wider and there is less motorized traffic going through. Moreover, there are far less tourists. The ongoings are more determined by locals and more or less permanent residents. Vendors are more relaxed and prices are closer to normal Moroccan standards.

Combo flea market and modified mall
Before the French arrived in 1912, the Medina was all there was of the city. Medinas are typically walled in areas (to stop invading armies) that are the old city center with market places and mosques with narrow streets and alleyways. Entering from one side takes one through a Flea Market with all sorts of stuff,,, all sorts, just like flea markets anywhere else. Overall a combination of modified mall with many, many, many small shops selling anything you can think of. Some very clean and modern, some a bit more rustic. It's easy to get lost! Best thing to have with you is a phone with Google Maps so you can see exactly where you are and find a way out.

Rabat's Medina is small and easy to navigate
By comparison to Fez and Marakech, this Medina is very small, but does have lovely artisan work in the streets on the North of the Medina near the Oudaiis. Always bargain - start at 1/2 the amount of the offered price. this is expected.
