Belghazi Museum, Rabat-Sale-Kenitra, Morocco

3.5 (14 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #10 in Sale Speciality Museums

Could be so much better...

We went today, about 20 minutes by taxi (from Rabat)... it is along a main road and can't be missed. The museum houses a lot of stuff that seems to randomly collected... some old Moroccan items, but also two samurai outfits?!?... Some is interesting, but bad lighting, bad conditions/ maintainance leaves you with a disappointing feeling. It isn't often that a private collector shows his spoils, so it is worth a visit, but a bit more care and better explanations on what is on display would make it so much better!.

    Confusion over museum
There appears to be some confusion here. Some people are writing about the large museum at Sale near to Rabat whilst others are writing about the Belghazi family home museum in the Medina of Fes. My understanding is that this is the same family but of course, two entirely different locations. I believe the photograph here is in fact taken at the museum in Fes not Sale.

    Interesting exhibits
As others have said, it's not the lack of great pieces here, but the way they are displayed. This is off the beaten path, north of Rabat, so you need a car/taxi to get here. We stopped by on the way to Tangier. All the words are in French, so we weren't able to understand most, but that doesn't detract too much from the quality. They have a lot of old religious books- Torah, bible, and Koran. You will see painted ceilings, carved doors, toys, saddles, pottery, jewelry, and so much from a normal lifetime of collecting stuff. I thought it was worth the visit. If only we'd had a tour guide. It would have been perfect.
