    Brisbanes Heart
It is surely not over stating it to say that the river is at the heart of the city even if much of the historic commercial sites and usage have long gone. Our hotel balcony on Kangaroo point overlooked the water and we could watch every type of vessel from lumbering barges, rowing sculls, sailing boats vying for place with the ever present CityCat and Hopper ferries. The riverside walks are well kept although at the time of our visit several of the ferry docks had not been repaired following the flooding earlier in the year.

We didn't see any bull sharks
We enjoyed walks along the promenade on Southbank and also walks along the City Botanical Gardens pathway and then New Farm, nice areas to view the river and some of the parks and infrastructure adjacent the riverbanks. We agreed that the best experience is on the river, either by City Cat, City Hopper or a River Cruise with commentary. Fascinating history, the river explored by Lieut. John Oxley in 1823 when capturing escaped convicts from the Sydney colony and named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, governor of New South Wales. Plenty to interest on the riverbanks with merchant buildings dating to the early 1900's and the more modern structures of housing, apartments and high rise office blocks. For a more static view we enjoyed a stroll across the Goodwill Bridge with multiple pauses to see the traffic on the river. The river levels from the 2011 floods are highlighted in various places, and the replacements pontoons and walkways and the stories behind them are interesting.
