Wonderful small museum of the history of coca and customs.

I enjoyed this small museum immensely. If you go, be prepared to read a lot of text, it is the fascinating history of coca from 20,000 years ago to today. The displays are colorful and well done with fabulous photos accompanying the text. When you arrive you are shown a 17 minute film showing the dances and costumes of various places in Peru. And on the top floor you can see these beautiful costumes and even try them on if you wish.

Very good history of the Coca Plant, and Dance Costumes also
I was advised no pictures, so I didn't take any. The ground floor has a good basic history as a starter kit, we got our cup of coca tea and walked up to the third floor so coming back down wouldn't hurt so much. The third floor has explanatory plaques explaining the dance featured then the associating costumes make perfect sense. Now I know why the dragon masks in town. The dances were often ridiculing the Spanish King, mine overseers, oppressors. Making fun, unbeknownst to the crowds, of the ruling class. Back to the second floor the artifacts show clearly the use of coca by the northern South American peoples back as far as 20,000 BC. First clear evidence was 3,000BC. The informational signs are in Spanish and English. Fascinating, especially the medicinal uses. Free

    Great small museum
Interesting exhibits and info about the use and history of coca leaves... Great upstairs room with a variety of traditional costumes worn for the Candeleria festival. Fascinating... A choice of 2 different videos to watch, 1 about coca leaves or the costumes and dancing.. In English or Spanish. Very inexpensive museum. Not big, an hour would be enough..
