Tortuguero National Park, Province of Limon, Costa Rica

4.5 (3.472 reviews) Spent More than 3 hours Ranking #1 in Tortuguero National Parks

This is what you came for!

You didn't come to Tortuguero to lay around the hotel pool. You came to see wildlife in a beautiful setting and the National Park here delivers. Our hotel (Manatus Ladge) ran the tours and coordinated with the National Park for our permits so we didn't have to worry about the logistics. They also supplied a guide. No matter how good you think you are in terms of spotting wildlife, you'll want to have a guide who knows where to go to maximize your time here. The natural setting is gorgeous and the wildlife is plentiful. We saw toucans, macaws, iguanas, sliders, howler monkeys, caimans, crocodiles and much more. I would recommend a twilight tour where you walk through the rain forest using flashlights. Scary but fun. Finally, I'd it is nearing season, go on a nighttime turtle nesting tour. Seeing giant turtles laying eggs in the sand on the beach at night in the rain was a premier experience. Take bug spray, a light rain jacket and a good camera with a telephoto lens.

    Tortuguero Tips
To visit the Tortuguero park you need to buy tickets from the National Park Online System, you can buy the Cuatro Esquinas ticket if you are visiting the park's canals or doing the Jaguar trail on land (long pants, long sleeve shirt and rubber boots recommended). Be aware if you want to visit Tortuguero Hill you will have to buy a separate ticket...take the "periferica boat" to get to the main entrance instead of the water taxi it will be cheaper. There is a lady selling tortillas with sour cream and queso by the main strip of town under a tent next to the water taxi station< best meal on the go you can possibly get> It will rain almost always, be prepared to get wet. We did the Kayak canal tour and highly recommend it instead of the boat or canoe one.

Get Rafa as guide if you want to see it ALL!
Get a tour guide, we were very lucky to find Rafa, his wife Jazmin and his son-in-law Andrew, we took different tours with them, because otherwise you don't get to see the hidden wonders all around, all you see is green everywhere but these tour guides have an expert eye and know where to find ALL the animals. Take the tour of the canal it is worth it. Visit the Public park. Take the night tour for snakes and animals from the night. They even lend us bikes (for free!) to see turtles. They are so nice and so helpful that we made friends instantly and we will cherish this friendship forever. Rafa has a cabina or B&B, and we felt at home. You get to explore and live like a local, it is a wonderful experience. My kids loved it so much that they want to live in Tortuguero!
