Stevens Twin Sinks Preserve, Michigan, United States

5.0 (3 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Posen Nature & Wildlife Areas

Frightfully delightful!

This place is bonkers! Follow a short trail to peer over the edge of sinkholes deeper than you'd care to fall into. At one point, the trail narrows, and you realize you are on a slim ridge with super-deep drop offs on both sides. Crazy cool Northeast Michigan nature at its best!

    A walk to another world
If you are anything like me, you have never been to a sink hole and would never consider going to one. I mean, come on, it's a hole in the ground. Well, I was wrong. Stevens twin sinks are just a few hundred feet off the road and easy to miss. There is just a very small sign and no buildings or other adornments. You can drive the two track (I had no problems in my 2014 honda civic) the eighth mile down to a parking area and you are basically there. Again I thought to myself, wow, it looks like a abandoned gravel pit and not a very impressive one at that. Again, I was wrong. Just a few steps from the car a dense wood looked impassible except for a small foot path. We walked in. You immediately get the sense that something is different here, I can't really put my finger on what but I suspect that due to the local terrain there are no animal runs through the woods and the well worn path is the only route in or out. The tree cover is thick and we arrived near dusk so our group naturally spoke in low tones as we walked the easy path. Then suddenly the sinks were upon us. It is hard to describe these massive features but you get the feeling you are not in Kansas anymore. The tortured land falls off nearly vertically in many places and you can stand on the edge of drops of several hundreds of feet. We rounded a corner and suddenly there was the second sink on our right with the original still on our left. The path between them narrowed to the point where we were basically on a natural land bridge only feet across. Everyone in the party had the same thought, "We have been transported to Mordor in the Lord of the rings!". Some members of our group became nervous at this point and required encouragement to continue. We did ultimately complete the path and enjoyed every step. I don't know if these sinks are typical but I intend to find out. This simple 20 minute stop has turned me into a sink hole enthusiasts!

Don't fall in, very deep, impressive
Parking available at the head of trail. Information sheets available on sign at head of trail. Follow the blue diamonds. View separately, or walk between the two sink holes. Very deep holes, but impressive. Be sure to cross the street you came in on, as there is another sink hole directly across the street: Boroinski?
