Family day near the planes

We've been hearing for this museum for a long time, so we decided to spend the first sunny Sunday there. It turned out to be one of the best choices for a family walk (my daughter didn't stop running and it is alowed outside) - with bonus enrichment of our historical knowledge. The museum has an inside exsibit, which to be honest you should not miss. It has two sections - one for the history of aircraft in Bulgaria and one for a short historical review of spaceflights (and there's a real capsule that returned from space). Outside there are many real planes and helicopters, and it is pure joy to walk among them. All of them have been used and some are from WWII. I strongly recomend paying for a tour, since you'll learn a lot of things and get an understanding for the historical value of what you're seeing. Also the guides are charming! Overall this is a great place! I loved it and I'm not one of them plane persons.

Interesting museum which is worth a visit
The Air Museum is worth a visit not only if you like airplanes. It is located next to Plovdiv Airport and It has 2 large exhibitions - indoors and outdoors, both of them extensive and interesting. Lots of helicopters, airplanes - fighters, sports, military, transport and passenger - that were used by the Bulgarian Air Forces or the ex Bulgarian air carrier "Balkan" (most of them Russian or made in the ex-Communist countries), anti-aircraft missiles, etc can be seen outdoors. There is a small info board next to each exhibit giving some technical and tactical data. Indoors you can read a lot about the Bulgarian aviation from its very beginning as well as many facts regarding the contributions and achievements in the area of cosmonautics made by Bulgaria - various de-hydrated food for cosmonauts developed in Bulgaria, etc. The original space-suit of the first Bulgarian cosmonaut Georgi Ivanov is also kept and exhibited there along with the original landing capsule from the joint space flight with the Soviet cosmonaut Nikolay Rukavishnikov in 1979. Also on display are aircraft engines, missile and machine-gun equipment for aircraft, catapulting simulator and many other objects. All the detailed information is given both in Bulgarian and English. Definitely recommended!

One of the best museums for an enthusiast
I visited on a cold day between Christmas and New Years Eve and the place was totally deserted. This was great. I have been to many aviation museums around the world (including Smithsonian, Hendon, Duxford, Castle AFB) and this is the most quirky one I've been to. Nearly everything is outside, there's a lot of rusty old jets, helicopters and other planes, a Mig 15 sitting in field rotting away, a biplane with the wings falling off but get over it. There are no museums I have been to that you have an opportunity to get up and close with some eastern-bloc planes. There is a slow but steady restoration program going on with the aircraft that are there and there are a lot of planes in really good condition. It's not Udvar-Hazy or Duxford, it IS somewhere where you can touch the planes, touch a Soyuz capsule that's been in orbit, and have a great tour one a one-on-one basis with the director. For me this is better than any of those places and really great. Also, you won't see the Arado anywhere else.
