oasis of peace

If you visit Lake Orta,do visit San Giulio Island. The boat round trip from Piazza motta in Orta San Giulio takes a few minutes, costs 5 Euro and the small boats leave every 20 minutes or so. On the island , visit the Basilica di San Giulio - in a room adjoining the crypt you can read about the history of the place, which has housed a church since the 6th century. There is a small path around the island offering nice views - incidentally called 'a voie du silence'. If there are tour groups visiting at the same time, try to stay away from them, as they will spoil the serene impression of the place....

    heaven of peace
taking the boat from the main square in Orta San Giulio to San Giulio Island takes less then 5 minutes - the return trip is Euro 4.50. The boat runs every half hour or so. Once on the island, you 're in a peaceful and serene environment. The large monastery dominating the island is not publicly accessible, but the footpath around the island is picturesque - incidentally it is called 'la voie du silence' (trail of silence). Make sure to visit the Basicila di San Giulio, a 13th century church with many (restored) wall and ceiling frescoes...

    Unforgettable place in Orta
A sensational place that cannot be missed if you travel to the Orta lake. Easy access from Orta San Giulio, where from the lake front square (piazza Motta) there are boats tking tourists to the island every 15 minute for the cost of 4.5€ return ticket. The island is very small, there is a magnificent churchjust in fornt of the piers, and from there the main path starts. Very narrow streets, very silent, very ancient, the celebration of silence. Apparently there is a monastry in the island. It's a unique place with little narrow alleys going straight down to the lake. sometimes people take the chance to swimm right from the end of these narrow streets as the water of the lake is very clean and transparent. i left the island totally fascinated by the view of the surrounding villages on the lake coast, the green hills, the mountains at the back end of the panorama. Certainly a place to visit again.
