"Island in the lake"

Lake Orta enchanted me by its otherworldly simplicity, isolation, winding path and that deep misty shade of blue that washed over the whole scene. It is less touristy than Como and has the added attraction of the island with a castle and monastery in the middle of the lake. Adjacent Orta San Giulio isalso a joy to explore as it has a timeless medieval ambience with narrow streets, arches, ancient structures and cobbles.

    A lovely lake to visit
With Lake Como taking up much of people’s attention in the area, this smaller lake is charming to the max. I recommend going into Lago D’Orta town and having a wander through the cobblestone streets before having a gelato and watching the boats go by. Truly serene and much less busy than the other lakes in the area.

    Beautiful but busy
This town and its lakeside setting is charm personified. The island nestling in the centre of the lake was just picture perfect. We did struggle to find parking when we first arrived around 1pm. But once we were sorted, (we used the multi storey on the edge of he town) , we loved the small town, despite the huge numbers of tourists (are they all there for the dozens of art shops?). There are lots of old buildings and quaint alleys. A drink in the small square by the boats was a must. We then had a good walk south of the town along the side of the lake which was quiet and just gorgeous - a great way of escaping the crowds.
