Phae Mueang Phi Forest Park, Phrae Province, Thailand

4.0 (70 reviews) Thursday: 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent Ranking #7 in Phrae Geologic Formations

Interesting geological site.

The place appears in Phrae's provincial slogan. Hence, it should be assumed that this is one of the must visiting places in Phrae. The site was free entrance. By walking about 150 m from the parking lot, ones will finally reach the place. The orange-brown region is full of many strange rock formations (mushroom/anthill ; depend on your imagination) which were caused by eroded dirt and sandstone over 2 million years ago. Visitors may walk to the viewpoint to see a panoramic view of the site and the surrounding green forest. Many nice spots to take photos. However, we recommend you to visit the place in the morning to avoid heat of the midday and don't forget to apply sunblock lotion.

I advise to visit this place.
There are no any public transport to reach this interesting and unusual place from Phrae. I rented a songthaew with driver at the Phrae Bus Station for 400 baht ( two ways and waiting there) for visiting Phae Mueang Phi. There are different erosion rock formations in different parts ( National parks) of Thailand but I think it is more interesting than others. I arrived there early morning and walked alone between rock formations. There are several view points where you may look at them from above. Being in Phrae I advise to visit this place.

An unusual park with many strange rock formations
Whilst not unique on Earth, this is a very rare park full of small to medium size geological formations of various shapes and sizes, some rising 20 metres or more above the surrounding land. Often called mushroom shapes, some are, but also there are cliffs and pillars and other shapes. The formations are estimated to be between 10,000 to 30,000 years old and are caused by the effects of subsidence and erosion on different types of rock. Although the rock pillars are old enough, some of the soil in the park is estimated to be 2 million years old. The Phae Mueang Phi Forest Park is about 17 kms north of Phrae City and is administered by the Thai National Parks Department having been designated a Forest Park on 4th March 1981. The name Phae (not the same word as Phrae) means Grove and Mueang Phi means Ghost Town as the Park is associated with ghosts, not surprising really given the strange shapes. The park covers about 66 acres and is a combination of rock formations and forest. However, unfortunately we arrived in mid afternoon on a blazing hot day and were too exhausted by the heat to see more than a small part of the park. There are many even more unusual rock formations further into the park but that will have to wait till another visit!
