    Gigantic church dominating Kampen's skyline
During medieval times it often took decades or even centuries to build a church. This gigantic Gothic style church is no exception. Construction of the Bovenkerk probably began around 1300. The main structure was completed in the period 1450 - 1500. Initially dedicated to saint Nicholas of Myra, patron saint of skippers, but also grain traders, after the Reformation it was given a more neutral name. In the Netherlands Nicholas of Myra is especially known as Sinterklaas. At the moment it is unclear what will happen with the church. Since 2017 there are no religious services any more. In 2019 the church was put up for sale. The Protestant authorities are looking into ways to find a viable solution. A major problem is the cost of maintenance.

    Lovely old church
The exterior of the Bovenkerk is very large and imposing so it makes quite an impression. Unfortunately for us it was closed so we could not see the interior. This situation happened to us multiple times during our visit to the Netherlands which was so disappointing as we always make a point of visiting the churches in the countries we visit.
