    Chateau de Foix image
Journey back to the days of chivalry ! From the heights of its rocky crag, Foix castle with its three towers and soaring walls offers exceptional views of the Pyrenees. Built in the year one thousand, it was originally a military fortress before being transformed into the home of the illustrious Counts of Foix such as Gaston Fébus, author of the 'Livre de la Chasse' (Book of the Hunt) among other works, and Henri IV who became King of France. It now houses the Ariège département museum: the bed of Henri IV is on display. The castle's various rooms are dedicated to the art of building in the Middle Ages, the history of the castle and of the Counts of Foix, as well as temporary exhibitions. After many years we came back and were not disappointed at all. The visit of the stunning Cité is a must in France, even in Europe. Now with the audioguide the visit is so easy as it never has been before: heeps of information and explanation, even taking pictures becomes easier. Amazing! Me and the misses visited the castle in April and we had a great day, The weather was stunning so the vieuws from the fort are even better. This place is so silent now but in the past its history was horrible and dark. Cathars burned at the stake etc. The weather needs to be good though otherwise you can better not go as the road up to the fort is not a walk in the park. Have fun! See more..

    Forteresse de Najac image
Its not all about the castle. The village is beautiful. Perched on a hill with wonderful views both sides. We used the car park in the village and took a steady walk towards the castle. Lovely narrow cobbled streets with interesting buildings along the way. Homes, shops and places to eat. A view of the castle almost all the way. Mostly downhill to start then upwards to the castle. We ended up at the Eglise Saint Jean. Impressive church inside and out. Once taken in the views we headed back finding other pathways to explore, sit and enjoy the views rather than visit the castle. A lovely lunchtime meal at L'insolite before returning to our car. Too many photos taken also. Well worth a visit. See more..

    Chateaux de Lastours image
Chateaux de Lastours are 4 Cathar Castles located in Lastours, a little town in the South of France. It is a great ruined castle (in fact, they are 4 little ruined castles called Cabaret, Tour Regine, Surdespine and Querthineux), Three of them were built before 11th Century, and the last one (Tour Regine) was buil after 13th Century to cotrol better all the surroundings. If you can see all castles, you will do a little hike (about 15-20 minutes) to arrive to the first castle from the entrance and you see 4 wonderful stone towers. It is a grat hike to do with children. Really, views of the surroundings from every tower are excellent, and views from each to other towers are very nice, specially from a nearer view point, from where you can see clearly the disposition of 4 castles to defend land. This impressive Château - as much a home as a fortified castle was the residence of a rich baronial family until 1715. Its towers, thick walls and domestic quarters illustrate its architectural development over the centuries. Towards the end of the 19th century the Chateau was bought and restored by opera singer Jean Moulierat who assembled an eclectic collection of furniture, tapestries, objects of religious art. Les Châteaux de Bruniquel image
After visiting Penne earlier in the day, Bruniquel was our next stop. This village maintains its history but it has been very well cared for. We parked our car at the bottom of the village and began the steep climb up the main street. Explore the side streets as you go. Near the top there is a clock tower where the walk continues through an archway up to the castle. There is a lovely garden at the top. Wonderful views from outside the castle walls looking over the River Aveyron. Time didn't allow us to visit the castle this time but it was lovely to explore the street. So full of colour from plants. See more..

    Chateau de Lavardens image
We 'popped' in here on the way to Toulouse airport from Condom. Castle sits in a beautiful setting above a picturesque village. It was not at all busy. Highlight is the "echo " room where you can hear a whisper from corner to corner. The castle is mid restoration and there is clearly a lot more to be done. The interesting thing was an exhibition of paintings and sketches by Anne Bachelier( on until end of September2016) a large and well presented exhibition. You could buy some prints and art books in the shop as well as general books on castles and local produce - jams, honey, wines and handmade jewellery. There was a little restaurant tight by the castle if you are visiting at lunchtime ( we weren't). Very photogenic view around the village which is also worth a stroll around. See more..

    Château de Puilaurens image
Strategically placed at 697m altitude on Mont Ardu, the Puilaurens castle rises up against the rocky overhang that dominates the village of Puilaurens, in the middle of an evergreen forest. During four centuries it was the southern-most fortress in France and locked access to the Fenouilledes. From the entrance, we can see the first stones! At the end of the road, the impressive chicane staircase rises up to the castle’s entrance doors. Impatient to discover the inside of the castle? Walk past the Murder Hole and the main court is unveiled. The surrounding walls and its crenels, the horseshoe towers are filled with history, marked by time… The adaptation of this fortress to its steep landscape show architectural prowess. It makes for an impressive reference point within the remarkable and preserved landscape.Puilauren's castle is a medieval fortress, mainly built in the middle of the XIIIth century, with some changes dating back to the XVIIth century. I had read last year's reviews and was a little concerned about possible long queues. In the event it was fine. There was a queue at the gate when we arrived but it was before the opening time. Once the gates opened we moved swiftly through. Security was very present but polite. The lanternes were wonderful and there were a few food and drink stalls available if you needed refreshments. We were handed a programme as we arrived and it could be useful to be able to download that beforehand with your tickets. I had bought ours online a few weeks previously. We were in a hotel so walked to the venue so I can't comment on the parking and navettes. Directions from the centre ville are very evident and so easy to follow. Afterwards there were food options under marquees in the central square although we found a nearby restaurant. A lovely experience all round See more..

We came to this village as it had been tagged as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Beautiful it is not - in my view - but it is a fascinating, amazingly well preserved 12th century stone village. The greenery and heritage of especially around the Château is magnificent. The visit to the church close to the Château made all 5 of us feel very calm and pleasant. After which we made our picnic at the banks of the river flowing flawlessly there. Then at 14:00 we visited the historical Château and gained insights about this special place. We had our evening coffee at a beautiful brasserie close by and were in a big dilemma whether to leave or not from this attractive place.
