Lidzbark Bishops' Castle (Zamek Biskupow Warminskich), Northern Poland, Poland
4.5 (187 reviews) Monday: Spent Ranking #1 in Warmia-Masuria Province Speciality Museums
Gotic masterpiece
The museum is located in one of the best-preserved Gothic castles in Poland. For over 400 years it was the main seat of Warmia bishops. Until 1795, eminent representatives of culture and science resided here as bishops. Nicolaus Copernicus lived here for several years and the most famous bishop, Ignacy Krasicki, who did not like the castle and stayed in it only in summer. The castle can be visited from the basement to the upper floors. The most interesting interiors are on the first floor: the castle chapel, the great refectory, the house chapel, the audience hall. The two-story cloisters are said to be the only ones in Poland that have survived intact.

A secret gem if you don't know Poland well
My wife is from this city and I've been here many times. This Castle is something that has seen colourful history and amazing changes over the years. As far as history and war is concerned then all historians should visit at least once (for several hours), given that Lidzbark has had it's share of Prussian, Russian, Polish and Germanic connections. It is quite a beauty (especially since refurbishment work) and is now funded I believe by a Scandinavian based culture heritage company of sorts. It is a baby as far as tourism is concerned because it lacks staff but the castle itself is several floors high, with a mixture of old woods, new scaffold, dungeons and unique brickwork. typicaly surrounded by a moat but with a modest courtyard, it goes below the level of the river and has some beautiful internal decor with an abundance of different rooms. Cheap if you pay in Euros or pound but about average if you are using Zloty. If you are in Lidzbark for any reason, you will miss out if you don't visit this castle.

Great castle
I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the lack of English explanations - and lack of signage overall even in Polish like what was this room used for.... Luckily I speak Polish and a lovely lady Maria asked us if we’d like a private tour (in Polish which was fine for my husband and I) and it was awesome - thoroughly explained the history and absolutely everything - it took around 2 hours. If it wasn’t for her and explaining everything it would have been impressive sure, but wouldn’t know much about the castle, the people, the history, etc
