Kayaking in calm waters, lots of birds, watch out for stingrays

We launched our kayak at the Bahia Delfines condos and paddled down to the Estuary. Tide was still ebbing so the current coming out was pretty strong so we beached the kayak and walked along next to the beach until we got past the strongest current. That's when we saw the first stingray. They apparently come into the estuary to breed and lay their eggs. This one was just barely visible partially buried in the sand. You really don't want to step on one as they can sting you with a nasty barbed stinger at the base of the tail. It's not poisonous but it is dirty and can cause a nasty infection, so always wear those thick soled water-walkers and shuffle your feet as you walk along. Tons of birds, white Pelicans, roseate spoonbills, oyster catchers, sanderlings, heron's all of which don't seem very concerned about us paddling by. You can rent kayaks from the Pilar rental place. Highly recommended.

This place is beautiful. I'm glad something like this exist. Not only does the guide teach you the importance of protected areas like this one but you also get the experience to kayak around this area. Well located, paved roads, knowledgeable guides that make you feel safe. The depth of the water is only about 3 1/2 feet. Safe for all ages.

    Bird Lover's Paradise
Birders will find hundreds of species, including a flock of roseate spoonbills, making their home in this protected estuary. All you need are binoculars and some good hiking shoes for uneven ground.
