Cholla Bay, Northern Mexico, Mexico

4.0 (213 reviews) Spent Ranking #4 in Sonora Bodies of Water

The only thing you have to fear is fear itself.

For the last 15 years I've been traveling to Puerto Penasco, Mexico (some call it Rocky Point) and just about every time someone says to me, "Oh, no, you're not going to Mexico, are you?" Just 62 miles across the border this town of 25,000 offers beautiful beaches, good restaurants and friendly natives and tourists. It is Phoenix' and Tuscon's beach, just 4 hours from each. ANY place in the world you must have your wits about you. For example, I don't drive in the desert at night. There is probably more Cartel activity in Chicago, Atlanta and Phoenix. So, don't be afraid....just go.

Some people just don't get it...
In reading these reviews about Cholla Bay and Rocky Point, it is clear that a select few tourists just don't get it. Sadly, the 'ignorant, ugly American' is alive and well. They seem to fail to remember that this is MEXICO, a 2nd or 3rd world country...Not South Beach, Florida, or Huntington Beach, CA with Hard Rock Cafes or the like. I've lived overseas, and I am constantly amazed that some Americans put every foreign destination through their ignorant American 'filter', and are always disappointed/complaining...It's like trying to put a square peg into a round whole - It never fits. Cholla Bay is rustic...That's a huge part of its charm. I have been traveling to this area for 40 years, and no one in the area seems to want it to be Cancun. It is supposed to be sleepy & relaxing! Yes, many things are closed mid-week, BECAUSE that is their 'weekend'. They are intentionally open Sat & Sun to profit while the tourists are in town. One reviewer wrote that they got sick on the food. Strange...I've never got sick on the food in over 40 years. So, in closing, to all those who complain about this area, perhaps you should plan a trip to the Ritz Carlton next time...In the USA.
