Why stay in de Randstad .. if you have Breda

MOTI - A Range of Experiences
Since I have studied Graphic Design, I was most interested in visiting this unique museum while in Breda. Entry to Museum of the Image (MOTI) is 7.50 Euro. Backpacks/Purses are not allowed inside the museum, so there is a nice clean locker area to store your items (including a place to hang coats and place umbrellas) before entrance. There is also a cafe and a museum shop, which does have an outside entrance, so you can shop without going into the museum if this is your preference. The shop has some unusual items and is fun to explore even if you do not make a purchase. There are well maintained restrooms on the premises as well. The woman at the front desk was very informative and helpful and represented the museum well. She handed me English pamphlets to explain the exhibits. This helped tremendously as all written and verbal communication was naturally in Dutch. There are 3 semi-permanent collections downstairs and 1 rotating exhibit on the main level. I felt that some of the exhibits were phenomenal and some of them were adequate, so there is a range of experiences as you move through the museum. The new rotating exhibit "Born Digital" was very intriguing and I loved this area the most. I also liked the interactive exhibits in the "Kids" section. I think MOTI would be most appealing to older school aged children, teens, and adults who have an interest in Graphic Communication. You should allow 1-2 hours for the museum visit depending on how long you wish to spend in each of the four collections. One suggestion for improvement would be to provide an audio guide in English instead of a written guide because looking back and forth from the guide to the exhibit inherently means you lose some of the effect. It would be better to be able to view the entire exhibit while learning about it from an audio guide. All in all, I am glad I venture to MOTI and enjoyed my visit.

A quiet visit
This museum is spacious, with friendly, helpful staff. Free entrance with the annual Dutch museum pass. The museum has two expositions on display: the permanent exposition about the history of Breda and a variable exposition; in the time frame of our visit this was an exposition about the village of Dongen and the various painters who got their inspiration there in the 19th century. This exposition is called "De heks van Dongen" (the witch of Dongen). After a quiet two hour visit, including a coffee in the museum cafe, I concluded that it was an instructive visit without highlights. Not a museum where queues are forming to see a famous exhibit, but nice enough for a visit when doing Breda.
