nice church and a nice tower to climb
nice church to see from the outside but also from the inside; friendly reception by volunteers AND a nice tower to climb, 183 steps to the top, but it's worth that exercise.

Beautiful Roman Catholic church on the market place.
You can walk by feet upstairs to the tower and have a beautiful view over Bergen op Zoom. Inside it's a middle age church and you can find a place to pray, to sit down or relax. It's situated in the middle of the town on the market place with many reaturants and terasses.

Dutch harmony
In 1747 the church was virtually devastated after an attack by French troops. The reconstruction dates from the second half of the 18th century. For most part of its history it was a Protestant island in a basically Roman Catholic region. The Protestant minority in Bergen op Zoom was unable to sustain maintenance and in 1966 handed over the property to the city administration. After a fire in 1972 the church was restored with public funds. The interior was furnished by two Roman Catholic parishes. The result is perhaps typically Dutch: different stakeholders working together more or less in harmony to sustain culture and art. A religious function remained intact as on Sundays there is catholic mass and at times there is an ecumenical service. A pity there is an entrance fee of 2€ (3€ in combination with a visit to the tower).
