Authentic City Walls and Defenses
The fortification of Heusden are a great way to see how people used to protect their own cities against outside invaders. The earthen berms are well-kept, and you can see many remnants of city walls (and also gates). The historic cannons atop some of the berms only add to the realism of the experience. While you are atop the berms, keep an eye out for sheep in the distance to the south and west of the city.

Nice historic place
In 1968 a start was made to restore Heusden - vesting using the Blaeu 1649 map. The result is impressive and you get a good idea of how the old fortified city must have looked like in the 17th century. There are still some 1500 people living in the old section of Heusden, though most shops and facilities are geared towards tourists. When I visited on a Sunday afternoon in October there were lots of visitors. Still well worth a visit.
