Grote of Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk, North Brabant Province, The Netherlands

Incredible interior

This really is a stunning Gothic and Nassau inspired church. Entry is free and there are many tombs and memorials to ancestors of the Dutch royal family. Some areas of the exterior are undergoing maintenance but the inside is unaffected and quite brilliant. Found a matter of feet from Breda Grote Markt.

    Great.
Very nice indeed to be back in Breda - which has always been my favourite City in the Nertherlands - drastically underrated. Had a walk round it, with some others - great architecture, and it always look impressive when illuminated by the Sun. Truly represents the very heart of Breda.

A very nice church in a lovely old town
Breda is one of the older Dutch towns with a lovely old center, with some interesting momuments such as the begijnhof, the watergates, the military academy and the big old church (Grote Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk). This is one of around 10 old Dutch churches that is really worth to visit. What is nice about this church is the decorated organ, the partly painted ceiling and the various grave monuments of which the ones of Engelbrecht 1 and 2 of Nassau really stand out!, you won't see many of these in The Netherlands or anywhere else. What also is nice is the Prinseschapel with the painting of Jan van Scorel. Like many of the Dutch Churches nowadays this one is also no longer used as a church, but instead it is used for exhibitions, fairs or concerts. For those who want to visit an admittance fee needs to be paid, but it is worth it!. Also check out which day the tower is open, because on those days you will have a great view on the old town.
