Sample La Trappe beer

We had a La Trappe beer in the Hotel Mercure in Tilburg and the waitress told us it was brewed locally.....so we just had to visit. Due to social distancing measures, it's currently not possible to have a tour, but the restaurant/bar is open and we were able to sample the beers for a very reasonable price. The abbey is one of only 12 Trappist breweries and, apparently, the only one to brew its own wheat beer. I'd love to come back when it's possible to have a tour round the abbey.

    very interesting to visit
    the four of us went to visit this beautiful and interesting abbey, especially for the brewery tour. the guide turned out to be a very pleasant, humorful and enthusiastic man in his fifties. A former owner of a café, not a monk. he explained evrything around the brewing of Trappist beer. The puur, the witbier, the double ,the triple and the quadruple. All different alcohol percentage and different tastes. We learned when you are allowed to name a beer a trappist and also about the daily life of the monks. There live still 17 brothers in the huge abbey. In 1889 150!! they make not just beer but also chees, very nice goat and cowmilk cheeses. And chocolate products. there is also a good restaurant ! And a nice shop with the products they make and many spiritual books. A place to visit.
