St. Peters replica

Saint Peters replica but then scaled down quite a bit. It is a wonderful and big building for the environment. Well worth a visit and a donation to help with the upkeep.

    Nice guided tour
I was lucky to walk into a guided tour arranged by a group of three people visiting the basilica. The basilica is a small-scale copy of the St.-Peter in Rome, after the wish of a Dutch priest who had studied there. The guide pointed out similarities and differences with the St.-Peter, all of which was very informative. The basilica is unique in the Netherlands with it's round dome and Italian style. The chapel across the road also gives an Italian impression. It is certainly worth seeing from the outside and inside, although most of the time it is closed to the public. When visiting these places, I'd recommend to also hop into the Zouaven museum for a unique part of Catholic history.

A replica of the Basilica di San Pietro in The Netherlands
For a small fee you can get a guided tour through this for the Netherlands unique church!.. so with a small group we called and arranged for a guide... the tour is about an hour and shows you all the ins and outs of this church.. even though it can't match the original in Rome it is still a great church and worth a visit. The architect Pierre Cuijpers in 1865 used the one in Rome as an example, but also used his own creativity... so don't expect a complete copy just expect a beautiful church and you will be pleasantly surprised... specially when you keep in mind that most churches in the Netherlands are boring protestant buildings!. The town is just a small town close to the highway so the best thing to do is to rent a car or take public transport.
