Jake is by FAR the best guide I’ve had the pleasure of fishing with. I’ve fished all over the world and nothing compares to the fly out trip with Jake. Catching fish (limited out in an hour) was only the icing on the cake compared to scenery, bears, flight, and having Jake be your guide. I felt like I’ve know him for 20 years and we were long lost friends. If you have kids, he will make sure they have the time of their lives. If you are thinking about doing a fly out trip with Jake, quit thinking, book it now, and thank me later. Oh yeah, the only reason it took an hour to limit out was because I was taking pictures and video for 3/4 of it.

Jake is the best
Yes, this was by far the most expensive travel day we have ever had, and we have traveled a bit, over 30 national parks at this point. I don’t like to always say “you get what you pay for”, and it truly was. But here is the thing. I don’t know if it would be the same if not for Jake. I’m sure the other guides at AOA are awesome too, but this review is about Jake. From the moment I spoke to him on the phone about 9 months prior to our trip, I felt a level of trust and comfort that I was looking for, planning an expensive day trip in the heart of remote Lake Clark National Park. This was important for me, especially traveling with family including a 9 year old, and I suspect for a lot of folks reading these reviews. We booked a bear viewing trip to Crescent Lake. Jake was upfront about the fact that it was kind of early in the season, but we went ahead, as this was our only chance to visit the park, and hopefully we would have already seen bears at Katmai by that time. Even though we weren’t fishing, we talked about some guides catching and grilling fish during the trip, and Jake not only remembered that conversation, he went the extra mile to borrow his friend’s grill so e would have a chance to do that! As it turned out, we had an “as good as it gets” bear viewing episode as soon as our floatplane landed on the lake. There was this family with cubs that was hanging out there on the beach. And then we discovered the hidden fisherman in our 9 year old! Jake gave him a primer. They caught a salmon, and several trouts. He grilled on the boat, we saw the bear family again, and the weather was unexpectedly gorgeous. In short, it couldn’t have been any better. And except for what the weather gods did that day, it was all because of Jake we had the day we did as a family, which will be one of the most memorable days that n our life. Thank you Jake.
