Surfing the wave

A tidal Bore is a tidal phenomenon in which the leading edge of an incoming tide forms a standing wave of water that travels upstream, against the current of a river or narrow bay. The tidal bore in Moncton is caused when the unparalleled tides in the Bay of Fundy begin to make their way up the historic Petitcodiac River. The Bay of Fundy is home to the highest tides in the world and over 160 billion tonnes of water comes in and out of the bay each day! Twice daily, observers can watch the tidal bore as this incoming rush of water overtakes the outgoing tide in the formerly placid river.

    Surfing the wave
Our view of the tidal bore came complete with a person surfing it as he took a selfie! There is a local guide to explain the bore and stadium-style seating so everyone can get a good view. It was a real thrill to hear, see, and feel the bore as it roared around the bend of the river and passed the viewing stand. Worth organizing your visit around the times for the bore.

Great to see and its free
Watching the bore come up the river was very impressive. The set up for viewing at the bore Park is really good with a good briefing on the bore by a local student before hand. The height of the bore varies a lot so if possible go for spring tides when its at its highest. Theres info on the web. Parking can be a bit of an issue if you arrive late although there was still plenty available on the side road across the main street when we were there.
