Beautiful lighthouse painted with red cross on its own island

This lighthouse is claimed to be the most photographed in the world. It is a must see on Campobello Island and can only be reached at low tide. The journey to the lighthouse is an experience in itself!

    Beautiful lighthouse and rugged coast.
I admit it. I love to see lighthouses and the coast they are guarding. I have dragged my poor husband along many a winding road some unpaved "just" to see a lighthouse. We have been visiting Newfoundland, Canada for over twenty years and have visited many lighthouses along its rugged coast. Since the pandemic, we decided to vacation closer to home and went back to our original love, Maine. Last spring we visited West Quoddy Lighthouse, older sister to Head Harbour or East Quoddy Lighthouse. This year we visited East Quoddy Lighthouse. Head Harbour Lighthouse was built in 1829 on a small rocky islet located off the tip of Campobello Island, NB to help ships in the area navigate the famous Bay of Fundy fog and high tides and the treacherous rocks surrounding the island. It is a large white octagonal tower with the red cross of Saint George painted on its east side. It is the first lighthouse constructed in NB outside of Saint John Harbour and is the oldest surviving lighthouse in NB. To get to the lighthouse, follow lighthouse road which ends in a parking lot. If you walk a short distance you can get a distant view of the lighthouse which is accessible only by foot at low tide. You cross a gravel bar (the ocean bottom) then ascend metal steps and a ladder. I could see all that from my viewpoint but we did not attempt the crossing. At least we saw it in the distance and we were in Canada once again!

    A gorgeous experience
Walking to the lighthouse is outstanding. The price is unchanged from prior years, C$5. The views are amazing and we had few people to contend with once we made the trek. We went just as visitors were allowed with the tide going out. You might want to wait a bit so that the path is completely above water. We drenched our shoes walking across the rocks. In the past, rocks were marked to indicate the best way to navigate through them. It’d be helpful to have it done again. I’d definitely recommend good shoes! We saw a number of people struggling over the rocks in flip flops.
