Fort Robinson State Park, Nebraska, United States

A Great Stop on the Prairie

This is an excellent state park with plenty of Western history, especially of the US cavalry and the native American tribes of the region. Markers note the location of the original fort and many buildings of the later installation remain, some being used as museums or cabins. There are some good trails on the edge of the park; we hiked up the ridges to the north for great views of the fort. Its in the middle of nowhere but a great stop to seek out.

Great place to have a family reunion!
All the buildings were closed on Sunday that we wanted to explore and that was our one full day there, so that was disappointing especially when there is no one manning them anyway. We did go to a few after checkout the next day, but the history buffs had already left. We stayed in 16A the Brick officers Quarters which was wonderful for our family of 6 adults and 3 children. The grill is charcoal, so you will need that along with lighter fluid and matches. Skewers for marshmallows. Aluminum foil, and glad wrap for leftovers. Bring condiments, and spices. We were there at the end of May. Didn't need bug spray. Highly recommend the Jeep tour. Get signed up early as they fill up. They can take 6 people per jeep. They have all the plates, cups, silverware, baking pans and pots that you need, along with utensils. We did bring paper towels, paper plates, and plastic silverware to help with dishes. Dish soap, dish rags, and towels were provided. They even had ice cube trays with ice in them. All bedding and pillows were provided. Fans in the rooms. No cell service to speak of, and no TV, but we didn't need it. The pool was really cold, but it had just been filled. It was $5 per person to swim. Horse rides were $25 for the short ride. Jeep rides were $15 per person. They do rent bikes out.

    A Nice Overnight Stay
We camped one night, off season, in an electric site #61. A perfect site with few sites near us. The campsites are spread out. We had an outhouse close to us and drove to the shower building which was very nice - uses quarters vs others we have encountered are now using tokens (and not the same tokens!). We arrived after the office closed at 5p, they had our information in an envelope on the door which asked us to check in when they open the next morning. I am going to guess this campground would be very busy in the summer time with families with all of the activities available in the park.
