Fabulous Place - Please Support!
Crane Trust Nature & Visitor Center is the public face of the Platte River Whooping Crane Maintenance Trust. We are a nonprofit whose mission is to protect and maintain the physical, hydrological and biological integrity of the Big Bend area of the Platte River so that it continues to function as a life support system for whooping cranes, sandhill cranes and other migratory bird species. The Nature & Visitor Center has over 10 miles of walking trails, a 35-foot observation tower, a bison herd, art gallery, gift shop, and informational exhibits. We also offer tourism information for the state of Nebraska. During the spring crane migration, we offer viewing blind tours to see cranes up close on their river roosts and driving maps of the area so visitors can see the cranes while they are in the fields feeding.

The Super Bowl of birdwatching!
Wow! The cranes and the sunrise were spectacular!! We did the Rowe Sanctuary tour the morning before and the experience was quite different. This tour was more laidback and informal. Masks were not required. The cranes took off in small groups against the backdrop of a gorgeous sunrise. The blind was warm and had an excellent field of view. The birds were very numerous and fairly close to the blind. Toward the end of the tour, a bald eagle flew into the river and began feasting on a dead snow goose. Mother Nature is amazing! The gift shop features many local artists and craftsmen and the cinnamon rolls are a nice treat at the end of the tour. We have experienced the crane migration many times in the past and we will return again. Every tour is a unique and memorable experience.

Family trip
We visited the Crane Trust in the afternoon/evening March 9, 2023. We were promptly created by staff and told all about the birds and where to go to see them. We really hoped to be able see them go to roost relatively close, but they stayed away from the observation deck. My kids (9, 11, and 13) enjoyed the stop.
