Great trip!!! You have to go to el puerto which is the little village where the magic starts. You´ll find the boats that will take you to the island of La corota where you can stop and walk through the protected flora and fauna area. THIS TRIP COST NO MORE THAN 25.000 PESOS OR 13 USD, NO MORE, and pay when the trip ends. In your walk up stairs ask about the HERVIDOS and have one to get warm. It is a drink made of fruit juice an a pinch of AGUARDIENTE. If you don´t like liquor just tell them and they will make a special one for you without it. When you go back to el puerto my best advice is to eat at REFUGIO DEL SOL and ask for TRUCHA ASADA (grilled trout) or the even better TRUCHA AHUMADA (smoked trout) and to dink another Hervido or Aguapanela!!!

The most tranquil place on earth
This is the most relaxing and beautiful place I've visited. It is gorgeous and so calm, at night you can only hear the water. Try to go on weekdays and not in high season as you'll be able to enjoy the scenery without so much noise. If at all possible, try to plan your trip to be there during a full moon, it will be lit all night and it's as clear as a late afternoon but more magical and peaceful. Also, if you can, stay at the Sindamanoy hotel as it has the best view of the hotel. Just be aware that it's a little bit cold as it is located 2800 mts above sea level and it's humid, so it get pretty cold at night, but it's totally worth it. You can also visit the lovely town that resembles Swiss chalets where you must go to the Naturalia restaurant that has the best food in town, and in Nariño and probably in Colombia. You can ride a boat and take a trip around the lake and get pictures of the landscapes and some animals. Just lovely!!

Pleasant Half day trip with excellent trout dish
Very easy DIY half trip from Pasto. Grab a collectivo taxi either at Plaza de Carnaval or at Calle 22/Carretera 7 (behind Hospital) for 4.000 (per person - 4 passengers) to the port of RIO ENCANO. There is a official point to board the boat for 35.000 (price for a boat) to ISLA COROTA, or walk all the way till end of canal as there are other boatmen with slightly lower price 30.000. Park entrance at the island is 2.500, half an hour is enough to walk all the way to and back from lookout. Then your boat will cruise around the island and after it returns to the port via charming canal running through the village. There are plenty of possibilities to have a local specialty RAINBOW TROUT. We got ourselves a set lunch for 6.000 (big bowl of fresh soup, half of the trout with rice, salad, french fries and drink). It was delicious and fresh. There are cars/minivans parking just out of the port to take you back to the Pasto.
