Rafting the Quijos River or Rio Quijos in Ecuador

Having rafted the Fualeufu River and a number of other big rivers in Chile, I decided to try Ecuador. This review is of the Rio Quijos, in the highland areas about 2 hours from Quito. Other reviews will address the Jondachi and Jatunacu Rivers. I rafted with a very well respected rafting and kayak company called Small World Adventures. Their safety and guides and spectacular. The Rio Quijos is a rain and partial snow fed river. The water tends to be cold, but shorty wet suits work fine. The river is chock full of class 3 and class 4 rapids. The Baeza to Borja part has beautiful scenery and fun rapids. I especially liked the Borja Run and the run through the "El Chaco" canyon, which were both filled with Class 4 rapids. The Quijos has no bugs or known poisonous creatures of any kind. You can stay at Small World's lodge and enjoy great food and accommodations while you enjoy this rafting trip. On the way back to Quito, be sure to stop at the Papallacta Hot Springs for a soak in the volcanic water to loosen your muscles after all that paddling.
