A wonderful visit to the Limoncocha Reserve
You can visit limoncocha independently from Coca. It is around 1.5 hours by boat which leaves at 7am from the docks in Coca and you can enjoy nice views along the way of the Rio Napo (around 5USD each one way). We were told there is also a bus from Coca so do check this out as well. From the docks you wait for the local bus and pay 50 cents per person to reach the small village. The national park entrance is a very short walk from the bus stop (Ask the driver or a friendly local) Here we met Carlos, one of the park rangers who took us to a rustic ecolodge with wonderful views over the rainforest and laguna (12 USD each per night). There is also a communal kitchen to prepare food ( you can buy supplies in the village). There are also restaurants. We took a 5pm tour with Carlos and saw many species of birds (This is a world renowned spot for bird watching). We stopped to try piranha fishing and caught Carlos' dinner. There was a gorgeous sunset over the lake and once the sun started to fall, the caiman began to emerge. We also stopped to see nocturnal frogs and the fireflies lighting up the lake at night. Carlos is a very knowledgeable guide who we fully recommend, he brought a bird book and binoculars to help us see and learn more about the animals. We paid 30USD for 2 people for a 2 hour dusk tour and it's 25USD to go out during the day when you can see monkeys and more birds as well as a hike in the reserve. Overall excellent value for the Amazon and an unforgettable experience. Here is Carlos' number and facebook for anyone interested in the same trip 0998181906/ jungle king Landázuri. We hope more people will visit this amazing spot independently. It is also possible to go on to visit more villages further along the Rio Napo independently (see our reviews of Yasuni national park and Pañacocha)

    Paradise for Nature Lovers
Laguna Limoncocha offers a great spectrum of birds, monkeys, caymans, insects, libellulas, ... on a very small concentrated area. A must visit for every Nature Lover and ornithologist! We took a Taxi from Sacha downtown to the Limoncocha Community (1 hr, $ 20). There is one little Hotel - Hotel Limoncocha - which offers easy rooms for $ 15 per Person. Across the street is the enctrence to Limoncocha Wildlife resort. We booked a guide (spanish speaking) upfront. With him we spent 4 hours on the lake, seeing approx. 40 different birds (without binoculars!) - some of them are very rare and hard to see in the rest of the amazonian area, 3 species of monkeys, many dragonflies and butterflies. An astonishing sunset and afterwards Cayman watching in the dark. JUST GREAT, romantic and breath taking! don´t forget your sun screen and mosquito repellent. wear long trousers and long sleeve shirt!
