Roviana Lagoon, Munda, Solomon Islands

4.5 (10 reviews) Spent Ranking #3 in Munda Bodies of Water

Placid, mysterious, historic. Traffic throughout the day from dugouts being paddled slowly homeward to powerful engines

The highway from the Roviana to Munda and beyond. The lagoon teems with fish, great dive spots and mysterious bush-clad tributories flowing from the interior

    Stunning
Roviana and nearby Vonavona lagoons are stunningly beautiful places. Some mornings the waters are so still you can see shoals of fish and solo turtles swimming beneath the boat. Sunsets can be spectacular, just make sure you have plenty of memory left on your cameras card before you go. The predominant form of transport is dugout canoe, formed from a single log, these are either paddled or larger ones have an outboard fitted. You will even see sails made up of rice bags helping to ease the burden of paddling. Fibreglass and aluminium boats with outboards are the quickest way of getting around and for moving large numbers of people. The lagoons are full of small coral atolls, some with pristine white beaches, others with so much vegetation that they look like explosions of greenery. Whether you dive, snorkel, swim or just like to sit in boats, the lagoons are well worth a visit.

A quiet "Hapi" place to go to.
Munda (where we stayed for eight nights) is on the shores of Roviana Lagoon. Every morning we would see canoes (paddled and motored) loaded with everything from fruit to timber coming in to the daily market. The quiet carrying on of every-day life was very calming.
