The Monticello Railway Museum is one of the best places to visit in Illinois period. Their collection is amazing. The pieces are incredibly restored. The staff are all very friendly and knowledgeable. The ride was the perfect length. My kids 5 & 7 loved it. We will be stopping frequently now. We really wish we’d visited sooner. The gift shop is also very nice in the old depot. The ride will quickly take you back to a time that was a much easier pace and things weren’t so hectic. I give this 5 stars. If you don’t love it you may just be impossible to please.

Made my boyfriend tear up a little.
This place was really interesting for me, but way more important for my boyfriend. He loves model trains! He grew up building them but gave it up for a while while he was doing odd jobs and he's picked it back up since I bought him an H&O train car. I thought this place would be a nice anniversary surprise, but I was the one to get the surprise when he started to tear up. It was adorable, the place was really interesting, there were lots of facts about the railroad, and you get to walk inside the old train cars which double as a museum. Then you get to ride to downtown Monticello, check out the sites, and ride back. Couldn't ask for a better way to waste the afternoon.

Railroad museum the best
The Monticello Railway Museum is a gem of a working museum for those who love railroading. My grandson is 4 and loves all kinds of mechanical things. Worth a visit even if you have been there before.
