Cliff Lake, Montana, United States

4.5 (18 reviews) Spent Ranking #5 in Ennis Bodies of Water

Breathtaking

This lake is absolutley breath taking with Crystal clear water throughout. The underwater rock walls are impressive and ominous as it show just how deep the area is. We same many large trout swimming under our kayaks. It was a peaceful float full of beauty and impressive views. Would 100% recommend.

    Beautiful Hidden Lake
We heard about this lake from a local and decided to visit. The drive to the lake from Island park is about 50 minutes. The last few 6-7 miles are on a dirt road, that takes you way out into what seems like the middle of nowhere. When you arrive, you'll first view wade lake on the left and then cliff lake is on the right. The water is so clear and has the shades of blue-green that are reminiscent of Caribbean waters. At cliff lake resort, we rented canoes and kayaks for 4 hours (35 dollars) or 55 dollars for all day. The lake water was cold but refreshing. We spent the day at the lake as one of 3 families with 7 kids aged 10 - 14. Everyone had a great time relaxing and enjoying a picnic at the lake. The wind kicked up later in the afternoon and it was tiring to paddle the kayaks/canoes back to the resort dock. No problem, the resort owner came by with a motor boat and offered to tow us back to the dock. It is suggested to arrive before noon as all boats were rented shortly after our arrival. Unlike other reviews, we did not see trash or hear any unruly language from the campers. It was a peaceful, quiet and beautiful lake.

    Isolated Alpine Lake
First of all - Cliff Lake is located 40 miles south of the location given on this page!!!! Take Cliff/Wade Lake Road off of 287 one mile north of the intersection with MT87 Cliff and Wade Lake are two glacier alpine lakes that sit in a fault. The 9 mile journey to the lakes from the 287 passes through the ghost town of Cliff Lake and sage brush plains slowly rising to the crest of one of the mountains that protect the lakes. These are small lakes, good fishing and camping. There are two sites with cabins for rent and a public campground. Cliff Lake is best used for kayaking, paddle boarding and the like. There are nesting raptors (eagles and ospry), deer, the occasional moose, and migrating elk in the fall and spring. Beautiful turquoise colored lake due to talc bottom in shallow areas. There are NO stores or gas within 15 miles. This is nature at it's best.
