A Treasure Not to be Missed

My husband and I spent a delightful afternoon at the Forbes House Museum yesterday. From the moment we stepped over the threshold, we were in awe of this beautiful house. Every room had so many historical pieces related to the China Trade and the Forbes family. Our docent Becky was extremely knowledgeable and answered all our inquiries. The Opium exhibit was very informative. We visited the first and second floors as well as the basement. The silks on display from China were exquisite as were the art work, furniture and the spiral staircase, Becky went above and beyond when she offered to show us the replica of Abraham Lincoln's birthplace. Thanks to the foresight and generosity of Mary Bowditch Forbes, visitors can see this cabin as well as the room dedicated to her expansive Lincoln collection. This is not a place where you can go from room to room and take everything in at a glance. Plan to spend several fascinating hours at this treasure.

    A little bit of everything
Our family stopped in on a Saturday in May. We dropped our daughter off at an event and had looked online for a museum nearby. Our other daughters requested a mansion. We found the Forbes Museum and it looked intriguing. We showed up during the hours it was open, without calling first or a reservation. The docents were lovely and accommodating. I think they were a little surprised we brought a newly walking toddler, preschooler, and grade schooler along with our teens to such a place (the Forbes family dealt in opium trading). We assured them we were aware of the family history. They happily gave us a tour and answered our all children's questions. It was fascinating. Children and adults learned a lot. There was even a happy surprise for us in a whole room dedicated to Lincoln and the abolitionist movement. The architecture was as interesting as the family's history and the artifacts. The grounds were also beautiful. Thank you for a lovely afternoon. We enjoyed our visit, learned a lot, and made a great memory.

    Cultural Mashup
This Museum was the home of the Forbes family who were engaged in the China Trade. The grounds are lovely with a pollinator garden and the Garden of Infinite Pleasantness. There is a story walk for kids and families. The house tour is interesting but not coodinated. Most of the house has Chinese export furnishings. There are several sets of porcelain. The bathrooms are original and have tubs encased in wood. Lots of curiosities. There is also a Greek Revival Barn and a Peabody and Sterns carriage house and stable. Well worth a visit.
