Earthcracks!
Earthcracks! None of us had ever heard of this rare geologic formation, much less seen one. We were not disappointed! Earlier in the day, while visiting the Besser Museum in Alpena, one of us had picked up a brochure that mapped out how to find the preserve and it's features, which was very handy. Once you've found the entrance, park by the side of the road, walk down the farm lane through the field, and descend into the forest. One of the first features is a series of earthcracks, which are narrow fissures cut into the ground. We clambered around inside the deep dank pits, which the kids said smelled like spiders. Further down the trail are fossils and a "disappearing" lake. All in all, very cool!

All seasons
Mystery Valley is interesting to visit during any season. The most fun I have had isiting has been with snowshoes.
