Lakelands Trail State Park, Michigan, United States

4.5 (37 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Pinckney Hiking Trails

Great for a walk

This is by my house and I have to say, I am spoiled with this trail. This trail is no longer a state park, but is maintained locally. It is well groomed and maintained, even in winter some of it is scraped. The trail is paved from Hamburg to Pinckney, past the west side of Pinckney it is not paved. The trail is approximately 20 miles long and runs into Stockbridge. The paved part is great for walks, bicycling, running or blading, and is nicely shaded. There are many places to park near M-36 or at the trailhead on M-36 and Pettysville. There are porta-potties at M36 and Pettysville, along with parking. The unpaved trail has been used by horses and is very rough, not very suitable for biking. There are a few benches in some areas, no picnic tables or playgrounds, this is strictly a trail. If you plan on walking your dog, there are disposal stations for dog waste.

Bike Riding on Trail that has canopy of trees
My husband and I rode our bicycles on this trail on August 20, 2015 in the afternoon on a beautiful summer day - temperature about 75 degrees. We rode from Hamburg to Pinckney - round trip was about 16 miles. This is an asphalt path which is basically a flat path - no major hills - one decline and up hill when you go under M-36 - not bad at all. This is a scenic path - there are some bridges over rivers. There are bikers and walkers on the path. Most of the bikers/walkers we passed we exchanged hellos with. Part of the path allows for horses - there is a gravel area on the side for the horse. We turned around where the gravel starts in Pinckney - the path continues when it becomes gravel. There are portable bathrooms at some locations along the way. We hope to have the time to ride our bicycles on this path again.

    A different perspective from Gregory
We finally got to downtown Gregory and found the trailhead for this trail. We were looking for the Lakelands Trail Loop of 27.6 miles. We should have started in Pinkney or Hamburg but we are stubborn and sometimes stupid. Leaving from the trailhead in downtown Gregory we got on the trail which was gravel most of the time. We only got about 6 1/2 miles out and decided it was a rougher ride than we needed, the wind didn't help either. We managed to avoid a lot of the horse manure and ruts and managed a round trip of 14 miles stopping for ice cream near our turn around point. This was a great trail as it was like being in the middle of a forest most of the time. It was flat and we only saw two people.. one with a dog the other on a horse.
