Multimedia, multi-decade permanent exhibit of large works in a original mill space
Susan has hung large weavings and paintings throughout this space with no obvious pattern. Wander as you choose to feel the colors and textures envelop you. Some of her work is realistic, some still lifes, a statue or two, and, most of all, her giant hangings. All are set against the blackened wood floors, the twelve-foot windows, and a few odd mill machines. This is truly a unique experience.

A Fusion of Art and Science
A light breeze comes through an open window at Sailshade Studios and artist Susan Mohl Powers' large, diaphanous, hanging canopy-like fabric sculptures come to life - moving, breathing! Featuring bold, geometric, multi-colored fabric motifs sewn/ stitched together like eccentric quilt-work, Powers' Sailshade art at times resembles stained glass or magnifications of cellular composition when backlit by natural light, as is the case with her Sailshade window installations. The installations, however, go beyond the aesthete and are quite utilitarian in that they are fully functional, similar to Roman style window shades. Designed to not only provide soothing comfort but also offer solutions with regards to heating efficiency and/ or sound attenuation. Window installations can be created ("tailor made") to address the needs of any window application-- perfect for sunrooms and study dens! Visitors to the sprawling Sailshade Studios/ Gallery will quickly recognize Powers as a multi-media tour de force. Her artistic exploration and appreciation of nature, science and the feminine form is evident throughout: the vividly colorful gallery of Mosaic Nudes (casein on paper) ; Elegant oils and acrylics on linen; Canvases appliqued with fabrics recall the joie de vivre of the large hanging sculptures described earlier; whimsical Illustrations of natural science; small hand-hammered bronze sculptures; Monumental perforated stainless steel sculptures, and fossilizations. The underlying, unifying "thread" across Powers' oeuvre is Movement and Light-- Life-- precious and sweet-- gently unfurling, blossoming. Definitely worth the trip up-stairs!
