A magical whimsy Medina
This walled Medina of Essaouira is huge with many entrances and exits . It is a shoppers nightmare with hundreds perhaps thousands of shops selling everything from fresh seafood caught within hours to Argan oil used in beauty products and massages to cooking oil . Many restaurants from casual stands to fine dining can be found here . You can even choose your fresh fish at a market and have it prepared right in the premises. Street artists performing and hawkers selling their wares . It is delightful chaos …pathways so narrow that push carts can barely get by . By the way most sellers bargain and they love to bargain. Carpets , leather products abound besides wood products. We even came across an Asian restaurant . The Medina even hugs the ocean , it has a rugged shoreline with great waves . You can easily spend a entire day or more inside the Medina without leaving it. The only negative is the more aggressive vendors who pester you , just move on without stopping. I really enjoyed the Medina and watching my friend get great bargains .

great
Unlike the medina of Marrakech - the medina of Essaouira is calm and slow . Its casual atmosphere let you stroll around the alleys, relaxed , without the feeling that you must shop or do anything in particular . People around you are patient and friendly . There are many interesting places to visit and do in this pleasant old town of Essaouira : Walk calmly along the various markets , visit the Ramparts , look at the fishing port , visit the Jewish Museum , or just have a coffee/beer break (or a full meal in one of the tempting seafood restaurants). We came down here on a day tour from Marrakech : Big mistake !! We only had about 4 hours to discover and enjoythe beauty of Essaouira . IT IS NOT ENOUGH !!! On our next visit of Morocco we shall make sure to stay in Essaouira at least a couple or three days . Highly recommended , and of course - bring along your cameras .
