Most Unique Tour on our Vacation
We did not have advance reservations. We arrived just at the right time in the morning to have a tour in English, along with a couple from Portland Oregon. I had no idea that watermarks had such an extensive history. In this tour, we were given demonstrations on how early watermarks are make, and then later in the tour how they are made today. This small facility does watermarks for some of the worlds most popular currencies. The tour guide was very informed about the facility and spoke very good English. They have two small gift areas. In one you can have a bookmark made with same type of paper as the early watermarks inscribed with your own name. there was a small fee to enter, but well worth it. At end of guided portion of the tour, there is a self guided portion, where you can see some of the earliest watermarks, through some of the more recent ones of popular figures. Definitely recommend this if you are passing through (and we were on the way to Abruzzo).

    A hidden gem
Not many people realize that a paper museum can be fascinating, but it is. There are interesting live demonstrations on how to make hand-made paper--the medieval way and the modern way. This museum is a representative of the paper company in Fabriano, one of only two in the world that still make paper this way by hand. The paper is exquisite. It is so well done, that this is one of the few places in which euros are made. This is also the place that invented the watermark. During my visit they were having an international festival of watercolor paintings. There were 750 watercolors to see--an amazing collection. If in Fabriano, it's a must.
