Lago di Fiastra, Marche, Italy

4.5 (471 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Marche Bodies of Water

Spectacular Beauty

Lago di Fiastra was created in the mid-1950s and is the largest hydroelectric reservoir of the Marche. To construct the lake, it was necessary to flood the village of San Lorenzo and several other habitations. A new town, San Lorenzo al Lago was constructed to accommodate those who had been displaced. This is the place where most people arrive to visit the lake. There are several good restaurants in the town and the beach there (with its Sun shades) is where most people stay and where there are the expected pedalos. However, there is also an excellent footpath that extends the whole length of the lake to the dam. For those who are more energetic, there are manp spectacular walks, including one along the gorge after the dam and one of the day's walk in the Great Sibylline Ring. The surrounding hill-slopes are in spring full of wild flowers and in winter, there are ski-slopes a few miles away. A fascinating and beauticul pparea,

    Stunning.
Came here a couple of times 3 years ago when our boys were 4 and 6. Since then, they have asked every year to go back. Which we did this year. (08/08/17). We stay in the Ascoli Piceno region when we come to Italy so it's about an hours drive away but even that is a joy due to the winding roads and stunning views. Once you get to Lake Fiastra you are blown away. The water is almost turquoise and the lake is huge. It is never over crowded and there are plenty of places to lay your towels and feel secluded. There is no water sports on the lake other than canoes and pedlos, which is perfect as 'motorised' boats and jet skis would ruin the tranquillity of this place. We always take a pedlo (vert cheap to hire) out for a couple of hours and let the boys jump off into the lake for a swim. As is the Italian way it is very laid back with 'Health & Safety' not ruining your fun, just make sure you are/have confident swimmers in your group. There is a place serving food and drink on the lake at very reasonable prices and around the lake in the little village there are a couple of restaraunts and ice cream parlours. I could not recommend this place highly enough. It is simply stunning and a must if you are even remotely close to area.
