An unforgettable boat ride

It is a lovely boat ride to see the Glacier Grey. After leaving the parking area you have to walk approximately 40 minutes, through a rope bridge, a forested area and then approximately 2 kilometers of sand in order to get to the boat. As the wind was very strong during the day we visited, it was not an easy task to do. But viewing the glacier paid us off. Although it is not as grand as Perito Moreno, the backdrop of the jagged mountain tops creates a unique scenery. The deep blue colors of the glacier contrast the black of the volcanic rock and the milky color of the water creating a one of its kind landscape. The crew of the catamaran was very helpful, obsessed with safety as everyone HAD to wear life jackets once stepped outside and they offered exceptional pisco sours! Yes, it is a bit overpriced but the whole experience is unforgettable.

Amazing Glacier in Torres del Paine
Amazing glacier in the Torres del Paine national park. The whole experience was excellent. We went on a VERY windy day. I was worried that the small boats that take you to the big boat wouldn't be running. The walk is quite long. Luckily we didn't have to do the walk and got a little wet while being shuttled to the loading spot for the big boat. The large boat is spacious with lots of windows. They serve limited food and drinks and everyone gets a Pisco Sour included in their fare. We stopped at 3 spots where the glacier meets the lake. we were all allowed out on deck once we got close to the glacier as it blocked the very strong winds. The scenery is magnificent. The hotel lago grey is quaint. We got food for the boat trip from their kitchen and it was quite good.

    Close encounter with a glacier
Well worth the stormy boat ride and howling wind to get so close to a glacier and to have so much time to see it. Even more important to learn that it is retreating at a rate of 40 metres/year and you can see for yourself how far this has gone in the past few years. The crew onboard were helpful and informative, but it has to be said that the organisation of the check in at the Lago Grey hotel leaves a lot to be desired. Staff were disinterested and provided no information at all on where to find the boat, other than a vague map which is not to scale. It turns out that boarding the ship requires a long, if beautiful walk through the trees and along the shoreline, starting at a completely different car park 2km from the hotel. Combined with the total lack of signage on the access roads, this makes for a confusing approach if you are not part of an organised tour.
