Cementerio Municipal, Magallanes Region, Chile

4.5 (2.595 reviews) Spent Ranking #3 in Punta Arenas Cemeteries

Good experience

The cypress trees make this place very special and some of the mausoleums are spectacular. There is a monument to the indigenous people as well which is also worth visiting. If you are interested in the history of the Puntas Arenas area and the influence of Sara Braun, this is the place to visit.

People are Dying to Get In
Thought that our guide was wasting our time in announcing that we were going to one of the 10 most interesting cemeteries in the world. However it turned out to be a fascinating chapter in Punta Arenas history. Many styles of architecture and very popular with families who respect their ancestors. Was made much more interesting by our guide’s stories Re the “residents “ and their backgrounds. Even more so when we later saw their names in the downtown area on their mansions. Nominal entry fee gets you a brochure with descriptions and locations of the tombs/mausoleums. Graves and structures festooned with flowers and photos/mementos of the deceased. Not your typical tourist stop, but it gives some insight into the history of Punta Arenas and perspective as to its place in South America.

Unique place to visit especially with a guide
I think you need to come with a tour guide since there are limited guides provided and it’s a very active cemetery in the first place. I think the history and several notable places are great to visit. However the maintenance by the municipal is a bit subpar since many of the beautiful trees need some aggressive trimming when I visited.
